Fiction Author: End Plotting Woes Forever (Yes, You Can)

Do you struggle with plotting your fiction? If you’re an author who finds developing a cohesive, exciting story a chore, and maybe even a nightmare, read on.

When I started writing, I struggled with plots. By nature, I’m a pantser—the type of writer who’s struck by inspiration and just wants to write. Laying out a cohesive narrative step by step, with fully realized characters and way points, was not only hard, it killed my inspiration.

For years, I wrote little.

Perhaps you feel the same way. You avoid creating book outlines; you’d rather poke yourself in the eye with a stick. Not only do you procrastinate, you begin books with high hopes and never finish them.

Here’s a solution I found accidentally when I had to outline novels.

Plotting made simple: just write it

After years of struggle and pain (and publishing few books), finally I decided just to get it done. Basically, I’d create a “pretend” plot. In those long-ago days, traditional publishing was the only option, and if you wanted a contract, you had to deliver an outline. The outline was part of your book proposal: three chapters plus the outline/ plot.

Why “pretend?” Because I stopped caring. I created outlines knowing I wouldn’t follow them, as written.

Here’s the magic. By the time I got the contract for a book months later, I’d forgotten my outline. So I just started writing, without ever referring to the original plot, in case it intimidated me.

After delivering the manuscripts, I’d cringe. Surely, an editor would call and ask me what happened to the plot? No, that never happened. Although I didn’t deliver the plot for which I’d received a contract, no one noticed.

However, developing the faux outline triggered my subconscious to come up with a better book.

Once I realized that, I had no further problems with outlines. I created an outline, realized my subconscious would come up with something better, and started writing.
