When writing fiction, write books packed with suspense
Here’s a short excerpt from the Introduction to Sell More Books Today: The Simple Secret To Successful Fiction.
What’s “suspense”?
According to Google, suspense can be defined as: “a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen.”
Synonyms for suspense include: tension, uncertainty, excitement—and my favorite: anticipation.
Suspense is essential if you want to write successful fiction. If readers stop caring about what happens next, they’ll put your novel down. They may never go back to it.
Few authors pay much attention to suspense, however. This is completely natural and understandable. Authors are focused on plotting, on their character arcs, on developing their scenes and setting… In essence, they’re focused on their writing, rather than their readers.
When I chatted with one of my writing classes about suspense, the comments included:
• Surely suspense develops when you develop your characters?
• Your plot needs to be suspenseful, so suspense is part of plotting…
Some students said they believed that suspense was automatic—part of character development or plotting. Others were confused. They’d never thought of the suspense elements in all genres of commercial fiction.
Some authors DO concern themselves with suspense; these are bestselling authors. Bestselling novels are packed with suspense; readers stay up long past their bedtime, desperate to know what happens next.
