In AI news this week, OpenAI’s ChatGPT enabled web browsing for Plus users, as well as a slew of plugins. And more: OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT app for iOS. (If you’re on Android, no worries, the Android app is coming soon.)
The iOS app looks like fun because it includes Whisper, which gives you text-to-speech capabilities: no more transcribing interviews. If you’re a journalist, Whisper could save you lots of time.
I’ve been meaning to try the Whisper plugin in Obsidian. Several years ago, Nuance dropped support for its Mac Dictate app. That was a blow; Whisper might be the perfect dictation solution for me.
Before we look at ChatGPT plugins, let’s talk about why… Writers have asked me whether they should use AI, and why we should care about AI at all.
AI news: why should writers and authors care?
AI has the potential to change the world. For writers, everything in the world (and outside it) is relevant.
Way back in the 1980s, I loved BBSes (bulletin board systems) and CompuServe. In the 1990s, the early web seemed amazing. Today, I feel the same sense of excitement about AI as I had about the web. That said, heaven knows where it will all end. 🙂
In the meantime, if you’re wondering how to enable ChatGPT plugins, such as web browsing, click the three dots next to your name at the bottom of ChatGPT’s left sidebar. Choose Settings/ Enable web browsing and plugins. (Currently for Plus users.)
A world of ChatGPT plugins in GPT-4
Once enabled, browsing and plugins happen in GPT-4, so click that, and you’ll see a dropdown, where you can enable browsing, and plugins too. If you click Plugins, a tick will be added, and all the plugins you’ve installed become available; ChatGPT will activate them according to your prompts.
Click the down arrow again, and you can go to the Plugin Store.
Hate something? You can uninstall any plugin you’ve installed in the Installed tab.
AI news from ChatGPT crowded out news about Bard
Last week, Google’s Bard was hot news. This week, it’s all OpenAI. There’s so much happening, it’s a challenge to keep up.
